Three Mocs advance in women's ITA regional and other sports news

Senior Kaylene Chadwell and juniors Kayla Jones and Kelsey Coots give the University of Tennessee at Chattanooga women's tennis team three players in today's main-draw second round in the ITA Ohio Valley Regional in Knoxville. Chadwell overcame a 2-5 third-set deficit to edge No. 5 seed Marta Morga of Memphis 6-4, 6-7(3), 7-6(4) in a 3 1/2-hour match. Coots also won in three sets -- 6-3, 1-6, 6-4 -- against UT-Martin's Hitomi Naito, and Jones topped Indiana's Shannon Murdy 7-5, 7-5. The Mocs' Samantha Caswell won 6-4, 6-4 in consolation singles against Murray State's Megan Blue, but Alison Storie lost 6-3, 6-1 to UT-Martin's Burcu Tari, and Storie/Coots and Caswell/Jones lost in doubles to Tennessee and Vanderbilt duos. "It was a big day for the Mocs," UTC coach Jeff Clark said. "To have all three advance in the singles main draw in such a tough tournament is huge for us."

Running

• Middle Tennessee State won both races and host UTC finished second in both at the Front Runner Invitational cross country meeet Saturday afternoon on Moccasin Bend. Senior Amanda Cotter led the UTC women with a fourth-place 11:04.80 in the two-mile race, while teammates Rebecca Greenwall, Maddison Melchionna, Jessica York, Emily Drouin and Keeley Stewart were sixth, eighth, 10th, 11th and 12th. MTSU won with 18 points behind first-place Jackie Kiprono; UTC had 39 points and Mercer, Lipscomb and Tennessee State had 89, 92 and 150. Shadrick Matelong led a top-six sweep for MTSU in the men's 5k, while the host Mocs were second to the Blue Raiders' 15 points with 51, followed by Lipscomb with 88. UTC's John Gilpin, Trevor Janssen, Patrick O'Brien, Harry Smithers and Matthew Marshall were eighth, ninth, 10th, 11th and 13th.

Golf

• The UTC women's golf team shook off a tie with two other schools and is 13th alone in the 16-team Mercedes-Benz Collegiate Championship in Knoxville after the second round at Cherokee Country Club. Louisville leads at 580; host Tennessee is sixth at 591; UTC is at 615 after Saturday's 298. The Mocs' Agathe Sauzon and Isabella Loza remain tied but at 17th, 16 places higher than Friday after 72s gave them 148s. Emily McLennan is next at 157.

• Council Fire's Richard Rebne joined with Kingsport's Mark Houser for two of the professional team's wins over top state amateur golfers Saturday in the first day of the Tennessee Challenge Cup Matches at Fairfield Glade's Stonehenge Golf Club. Craig Lee of Springbrook in Niota was part of a win and a halve as the pros took an 8-6 lead, and former Chattanoogan Matthew Brock and Fairfield Glade's Kelvin Burgin each was part of a first-round win. The non-playing captains are both Chattanoogans: Hunt Gilliland for the pros and Mike Jenkins for the amateurs.

• Eight-time Georgia men's amateur golfer of the year David Noll Jr. of Dalton heads the GSGA team taking on a group from the Georgia Section PGA in the Billy Peters Cup Matches today and Monday at Champions Retreat in Evans, Ga. Calhoun's Cres Dodd also is on the 16-man amateur team, which includes Noll for the seventh consecutive time in the biennial competition.

Volleyball

• Kristen Pickett from Cleveland High School had 30 assists and five aces and Rachel Harper from Boyd-Buchanan had eight kills and eight digs as the Carson-Newman volleyball team improved to 13-1 in the South Atlantic Conference with a 3-0 win (25-12, 25-23, 25-20) Saturday over visiting Catawba. Then Pickett had 38 assists and eight aces while Harper sat out a 25-22, 25-21, 25-12 defeat of Belmont Abbey for the Lady Eagles (18-4).

Field Hockey

• Emma Horgan's two goals in the first 12 minutes propelled Sewanee to a 6-2 field hockey win over visiting Southern Athletic Association affiliate member Transylvania on Saturday. Zuie Billings, Monica Bueso, Carrie Anderson and Katie Wilson also scored for the Tigers (7-6, 4-3), and Virginia Barry, Billings and Kya Wence had assists. It was Sewanee's third win in a row.

Swimming

• Samantha Vargo from Signal Mountain was part of the winning 200-yard medley relay and won the 100 butterfly and 100 backstroke as the King University women's swimming and diving team won 88-70 at West Virginia Tech on Saturday. In Friday's 102-89 win over Milligan, Vargo also helped in the first-place medley relay and won the 100 fly and finished second to a teammate in the 100 back.

Football

• UTC wide receivers coach Will Healy will be the guest speaker for the Chattanooga Quarterback Club's noon luncheon meeting Monday at Finley Stadium, and the public is invited. Attendance costs $10 with a meal, $4 without. Healy, a Chattanooga native, will talk about Saturday's game at The Citadel and this week's game against Mercer.
