The second of three lectures put on by the Friends of Moccasin Bend and the University of Tennessee at Chattanooga is on for tonight.

Historian, professor and author Vicki Rozema will speak at 7 p.m. at the UTC University Center Auditorium. Rozema, who has written three books on Cherokee history, will speak about the Trail of Tears and the current effort by the National Park Service and Friends to reclaim and open the historic Old Federal Road on Moccasin Bend. The old road was a main route used during the 1838 Cherokee Removal.

Specifically, Rozema will speak on how science and technology in the 19th century American South played a role in the Cherokee Removal.

The lectures are produced by the local Friends group; the UTC Department of Sociology, Anthropology and Geography; and underwritten by businessman Greg Vital.

Parking is free after 5:30 p.m. on the UTC campus. Visitors should use one of the two closest lots to the University Center: the surface lot on Fifth Street at Lansing Court.

The lecture series is now in its ninth year. The third and final lecture this year will be Nov. 10.
