Business News: Georgia tops jobless rates

Georgia continued to have the highest unemployment rate of any state last month even though the jobless rate in the Peach State dipped in September from 8.1 percent to 7.9 percent.

The U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics said Tuesday that the seasonally adjusted unemployment rate last month was down in 31 states. North Dakota had the lowest jobless rate in Sepember at 2.8 percent.

Unemployment fell last month in Tennessee from 7.4 percent to 7.3 percent and fell in Alabama from 6.9 percent to 6.6 percent.


PS Logistics buys Purdy Trucking

PS Logistics, the Birmingham, Ala.-based parent company of P&S Transportation, has acquired Purdy Brothers Trucking and Loudon County Trucking for an undisclosed amount. The purchase will add a combined 220 new drivers, 210 tractor trucks and more than 500 trailers to the growing P&S fleet, including reefers, flatbeds and dump trailers. P&S also gains new trucking terminals in Tennessee, Florida, Illinois and Virginia, and adds new customers in the aluminum, steel, food and building materials sectors.
