California jury says castrated sex offender should be freed

SANTA ANA, Calif. - A California jury has concluded that a castrated sex offender is no longer a sexually violent predator and is eligible for release from a mental hospital.

Lawyers involved in the case say the Orange County jury in Santa Ana reached its decision Friday.

Deputy Public Defender Holly Galloway adds that 53-year-old Kevin Reilly could be released as early as Friday.

She says Reilly spent time in prison for sex offenses committed in the 1980s and 1990s. He has been confined to a state mental hospital since 2000.

Galloway says Reilly had himself surgically castrated in 2003 to help control his pedophilia and completed a treatment program for sex offenders in 2010.

Prosecutors opposed his release.
