Whitfield County Sheriff's Patrol Sgt. Micheal Smitherman, 44, showed up Friday morning for a mandatory domestic violence training and wound up on administrative leave because he drove there in his patrol car under the influence of alcohol.

According to a statement issued Monday morning by Sheriff Scott Chitwood, a senior officer noticed the smell of alcohol on Smitherman's breath, which led to an intoxilyzer test that showed Smitherman was over the legal limit to drive.

Smitherman was immediately relieved of duty and placed on administrative leave pending an investigation.
