Tennessee Department of Education names Ronald Hughes 2014-2015 Principal of the Year

The Tennessee Department of Education named a Hamilton County Schools principal as its 2014-2015 Principal of the Year.

The state tapped Apison Elementary School Principal Ronald Hughes for the top honor. He has served as Apison Elementary's principal for more than a decade, and he's been in education for 30 years.

Education officials announced the award Tuesday at a statewide conference for education leaders.

The award recognizes administrators who have helped build a better education for Tennessee students through leadership, programs and vision.

Hughes, who could not be reached for comment Wednesday, was selected from among nine principals named as regional finalists after being nominated by their peers, according to a Tennessee Department of Education news release.

Hughes landed the Tennessee Principal of the Year and East Grand Division Winner titles. Beth Unfried, principal of Norman Smith Elementary in Clarksville-Montgomery County Schools, was named the winner for the Middle Grand Division. Sharon McNary, principal of Richland Elementary in Shelby County, was named winner for the West Grand Division.

Timothy Parrott, director of secondary education and career and technical education in Anderson County, was named Tennessee's 2014-15 Supervisor of the Year.
