Lee golf teams third, fourth at NCCAA tourney and other sports stories

The Lee University men's golf team finished fourth in the nine-team NCCAA national tournament Tuesday at The Hombre course in Panama City Beach, Fla., and the Lee women wound up tied for third out of nine schools. Taylor Davis finished with a 76 on Wednesday to finish third individually at 221, and teammate Peyton Sliger was a stroke back at 222 in a five-way tie for fourth. Matt Strube tied for 11th at 226, and Corey Sheppard was tied for 29th at 234. Bernadette Little and Sam Burrus lead the charge for the Lady Flames, finishing fourth and fifth overall, as little shot a 77 on Wednesday to finish at 234, with Burrus one stroke back at 235. Cailey Gino tied for 11th at 239 while Caroline Moore wrapped up a solid Lee showing with a 19th place finish at 246.

• Hunter Cornelius from Heritage High School in Ringgold tied for 10th individually at 220 and his Coastal Georgia team was second out of 18 in the Dave Adamonis Sr. Invitational played Monday and Tuesday at Trump National Doral in Doral, Fla. The Mariners totaled 869 for 54 holes, six behind Wayland Baptist, in the event that included six teams ranked in the top 10 of the NAIA. Coastal Georgia won its three previous tournaments this semester after winning the NAIA title last spring.

Basketball

• The Bryan College men's and women's basketball teams opened with a doubleheader sweep over Hiwassee. The Bryan men won 87-62 while the women won 86-52.

• Bryan student Gustavo Angel Tamayo won $10,000 in tuition money by making a layup, a free throw, a 3-point basket and a half-court shot within 30 seconds in the Dayton school's Midnight Madness event. Tamayo is a senior soccer player from London, England. The sequence of shots and the crowd's enthusiastic response can be seen on YouTube.

Volleyball

• The University of Tennessee at Chattanooga lost 3-0 in Southern Conference volleyball Wednesday night at Samford. Set scores were 25-22, 25-19, 25-17. Emily Morrison led the Mocs with nine kills and Lauren Gainer led with four blocks. Anne Bachmann was the assists leader with 22 and Catherine Chason totaled 10 digs and Melissa Green had nine.

• Covenant College pulled off a five-set win at Sewanee in NCAA Division III volleyball Wednesday night. Ginny Moore dominated the match for the Scots with 27 kills, 30 digs and four aces in the 17-25, 25-17, 25-22, 20-25, 15-9 victory, and teammate and twin sister Schuyler Moore had a triple-double with 14 kills, 24 assists and 11 digs. For Sewanee, Diamond Stewart had 14 kills, and Sara Jayne Sutton made 25 digs in the loss.

• Bryan's Kara Stamper was the Appalachian Athletic Conference volleyball hitter of the week for the second time this season after totaling 67 kills in 17 sets in five matches last week.

• Tennessee Temple begins play in the USCAA national volleyball tournament today at Canton, N.Y. Its first match is against Florida College at 11:30 a.m. The next is at 2:30 against Alfred State and its final match of the day is against Carlow University at 5. Temple's Victoria Smith has been chosen a second-team All-American and Naomi Posada earned an honorable mention.

Soccer

• The Covenant men's soccer team will be seeded second and host a quarterfinal match in the USA South tournament Saturday after ending the regular season with a 4-1 win at Piedmont on Tuesday. Builder Brock, Ian Meredith, Snoopy Davidson and Noah Wiersema scored goals for the Scots (12-4-2, 8-1-1), who outshot their hosts 23-7. Hunter Brock and Danny Knight had assists.

• The Covenant Lady Scots lost 1-0 in their USA South soccer match Wednesday at Piemont.

• Bryan College improved to 8-7-2 in men's soccer, 5-4 in the AAC, with a 3-0 win Tuesday night at Bluefield College. The Tennessee Wesleyan men lost 4-1 against visiting Milligan in an ACC match Wednesday.

• The University of Tennessee at Chattanooga's women's team had its season come to an end Wednesday in the first round of the Southern Conference tournament with a 5-0 loss to Wofford at Spartanburg, S.C.

• Two Premier Soccer Academy teams from Chattanooga won their age groups last weekend in the Bash in the Boro at Murfreesboro: the under-18 Lanus in the U-19 White Division and the U-15 Los Guapos in the U-15 Gray. The Lanus, coached by Pedro Kozak with Charlie McKay assisting, went 4-0 with a 25-2 margin in goals. Los Guapos, coached by Kozak and Kevin Stophel, won 1-0, 3-0 and 3-2 and tied the Tennessee SC18 Premier 1-1.

Golf

Former Soddy-Daisy standout and current Austin Peay golfer Jessica Cathey was named Ohio Valley Conference golfer of the week Wednesday. Cathey was honored after finishing tied for fourth a 2-over-par 146 at the UAB Ball Beach Blast at Gulf Shores, Ala., just three shots behind the event medalist. Cathey is tied for seventh in the OVC in stroke average at 76.
