Gardner-Webb erupted for six second-half goals and beat the University of Tennessee at Chattanooga 7-2 in women's soccer Sunday afternoon at Finley Stadium. Each team is 1-3. The visitors' Jessica Ferguson scored the game's first goal from a Tori James assist 39:57 into the match, and Brandi Arey made it 3-0 with two goals in the first six minutes of the second half. Logan Higgins countered for UTC at 52:19 and Crystal Mackezyk netted a penalty kick at 61:04 that cut the margin to 4-2, but Gardner-Webb added scores from Shelby Hooe, Ferguson and Annie Ross. The Bulldogs outshot the Mocs 17-8 and had a 5-2 edge in corner kicks, with 4-1 of that in the almost scoreless first half. Veteran UTC coach J.D. Kyzer still found a way to be positive. "I'm proud of the way we're playing," he said in a school release. "With our injury situation, we have so many out of position right now, but we're attacking better. We have more goals through four games this year compared to this time last year (12-9)." As they do every year on Labor Day, the Mocs will provide volunteer support this morning at the FCA road race at Chattanooga State.

• The Sewanee men's soccer team lost 1-0 at home against Denison on Sunday, dropping the Tigers to 0-2. Evan Porter scored with four minutes to go in the first half from a Mark Waterman assist. Denison had slight edges in shots and corner kicks, 8-7 and 9-6, and Conrad Bandoroff made three saves in defeat.

Volleyball

• The UTC volleyball Mocs left Houston on a good note after beating tournament host Houston Baptist 3-2 Saturday night. Sarah Batterton registered 18 kills and Julimar Alvarado added 15 in the 25-16, 25-23, 23-25, 19-25, 15-7 win for the Mocs (1-2), while Kristy Wieser and Briana Reid had 12 kills apiece plus 23 and 16 digs, freshman setter Lauren Greenspoon had 53 assists and four aces and libero Catherine Chason and Brianna Guzinski made 22 and 14 digs. UTC stretched its fifth-set lead from 8-6 to 13-6 on Wieser's serve, including two Reid kills. Chason was voted to the all-tournament team. "She played really well," UTC coach Travis Filar said in a school release. "She is really a defensive anchor for us. She does a great job of keeping her composure no matter the score and does her job." The Mocs will host Kennesaw State at 6 p.m. Tuesday in Maclellan Gymnasium.

Field Hockey

• Kenyon eded Sewanee 3-2 in a field hockey match played Sunday in Danville, Ky., although the Tigers (0-2) took the lead early in each half. Janie Spilman scored unassisted 4:26 into the match, and the 1-0 margin held up for 26 minutes. Sarah Barry put Sewanee ahead again at 49:17, but Christine Bloom at 58:35 and Cecilia Depman at 58:35 netted scores for Kenyon (2-0). The Lords outshot the Tigers 42-12, but Gabrielle Fignar made 18 saves for Sewanee.
