Covenant has six league honorees - and more Chattanooga region sports news

Six Covenant College athletes earned USA South honors for the first week of competition in their respective sports. Beth Burgess and Graham Massot were USA South runners of the week and Margaret Fitch and Eliot Kaufmann were rookie runners of the week, whlie Joel Friesen was the men's soccer player of the week and Chloe Carlson was the volleyball defensive honoree. Both Burgess and Massot won individually and led team victories in the Mountaintop Invitational cross country meet, where Kaufmann was third in the men's race and fellow freshman Fitch was fourth among the women. Friesen scored all three of the soccer Scots' goals in a 3-1 season-opening win. Carlson averaged 6.6 digs per set as the volleyball team went 4-0 in Birmingham-Southern's tournament, and she totaled 38 digs against BSC.

Auto Racing

• Local two-time dirt track world champion Ronnie Johnson won $3,000 last Friday night at Boyd's Speedway for the first leg of the scheduled Labor Day weekend Triple Crown for Super Late Models. Riley Hickman of Cleveland finished second in the National Boiler Service 40, and Ivadent Lloyd of Ocala, Fla., Jamie Perry of Ringgold, Jake Knowles of Tyrone, Ga., and Mike Tinker of Ringgold completed the top six. Jason Welshan of Maryville won the Crate Late Model race with Winchester's Ryan Gifford second, Ethan Hunter of Tiger, Ga., third and Jeff Smith of Villanow fourth. Eric Hughes won the B-Hobby race for the second week in a row. Catoosa County's curfew kept the A-Hobby field from competing, so two races for that class are planned for Saturday.
