A 3-year-old girl has died in Chattanooga, the victim of suspected child abuse, police say.

Chattanooga police were called to a hospital on August 26.

Rhasean Lowry, 24, stated the child fell down steps, according to a news release from the Chattanooga Police Department.

Doctors advised, however, that the victim's injuries were the result of blunt force trauma consistent with being struck numerous times and that the injuries could not have occurred the way the suspect stated, the release stated.

Lowry was charged with aggravated child abuse the same day.

The child died the next day, August 27.

The suspect is now awaiting trial with an additional charge of criminal homicide.
