Morgan Billups of the Chattanooga Lookouts organization was announced Thursday as the Southern League "Woman of Excellence" for 2014, as voted on by the league's general managers. The team's group sales manager is the first Lookouts representative to win this award, and she is the SL's nominee for the Rawlings Woman Executive of the Year. One of her contributions was overseeing plans for the 2014 league all-star activities in Chattanooga, including the home run derby at Engel Stadium and the all-star game at AT&T Field. "Pulling off such an outstanding effort for the Southern League and the city of Chattanooga is a great accomplishment that would not have been possible without her," Rich Mozingo, the Lookouts' president and general manager, said in a team release. "Morgan has been an important part of our organization for two seasons in many different ways. As well as being a terrific group sales manager, she is integral in hiring and training our entire ushering staff throughout the year." Billups holds degrees from West Virginia Wesleyan College and West Virginia University and joined the Lookouts in 2012 as an intern working in group sales.
Soccer
• Four Lee University soccer players scored goals as the Flames opened their season Thursday night with a 4-1 defeat of Tennessee Temple in Cleveland. Robbie Cutchin scored from 25 yards just 1:31 into the match, and Jonathan Finlay made it 2-0 at 27:44 with a double-assist from Gabe Franco and David Perez. Finlay assisted Quade Marinell and Jake Molony netted a penalty kick in the second half, with Temple's Gerardo Mondragon scoring in between from a Lionel Burgos assist off a corner kick. Lee led 22-6 in shots.
• Sewanee won 3-2 in men's soccer Thursday at LaGrange, giving Tony Pacella his first coaching win. The Tigers (1-2) led 20-6 in shots and went ahead 1-0 late in the first half on a Reed Dowdy score from Bobby Zolper off a corner kick, but they needed goals in the 75th and 78th minutes from Carter Gray (also assisted by Zolper) and Ford Emerson to prevail.
Volleyball
• Mikiah Treece made 23 digs and Holly Mount and Sabrina Garcia contributed eight and seven kills as Georgia Northwestern downed visiting Welch College 3-0 (25-22, 25-19, 25-21) in volleyball Thursday night in Rossville. Rachel McGill had 15 assists and Katlyn Bishop served for the five final five points of the first sest and totaled three aces for the Lady Bobcats (2-1).
