Several Cleveland restaurants support cancer benefit

CLEVELAND, Tenn. - Several Cleveland restaurants will be "Kickin' It" this week to benefit the Austin Hatcher Foundation for Pediatric Cancer, according to a news release.

Since 2010, Lee University's Lady Flames have used early-season games to raise funds for the AHF through the Kickin' It for Kids With Cancer event, the university release stated.

The following restaurants will donate a percentage of their sales: on Tuesday, Zaxby's from 5-8 p.m.; on Wednesday, Domino's Pizza; on Thursday, Santa Fe from 4-8 p.m.; on Friday, Chick-fil-A; on Saturday, Aubrey's. In addition, Jenkins Deli will donate on sales of their full chicken salad sandwich throughout the week.

The 2014 benefit game is set for 7 p.m. Friday against Findlay University at the Lee Soccer Field. Leading up to the game, team members will raise money by selling "Kickin' It" shirts, which can be purchased from a player or at Cooke's Food Store, Gobble Automotive, Jenkins Deli, and Jordan's BBQ.

State's No Child waiver extended

WASHINGTON, D.C. - The Obama administration says Tennessee has received a one-year extension for flexibility from certain provisions of the No Child Left Behind Act.

"America's schools and classrooms are undergoing some of the largest changes in decades - changes that will help prepare our students with the critical thinking and problem-solving skills that tomorrow's economy will require," U.S. Education Secretary Arne Duncan said in a news release.

Since fall 2011, the Tennessee Department of Education has worked to move local educational agencies toward college- and career-ready standards, including statewide assessments in math and in reading/language arts; toward training and professional development and putting in place instructional resources and materials aligned with the standards.

Other steps include convening Focus School principals in November 2013 to develop strategies for improvement at such low-performing schools, and partially or fully implementing teacher and principal evaluation systems, the release stated.

Wildflower walk set Saturday

FORT PAYNE, Ala. - Little River Canyon National Preserve will have a wildflower walk at 10 a.m. CDT Saturday.

Ranger Larry Beane will lead the walk beginning at Lynn Overlook and continue onto the Beaver Pond Trail.

Many rare plants inhabit the rocky Lynn Overlook. Some of the summer's wildflowers have gone to seed and new fall season flowers are emerging to replace them. Ranger Beane said, "We hope to see one of the two carnivorous plants, and possibly the rare Menge's Fameflower."

Meet at the Lynn Overlook parking area about one mile south of Highway 35 on Highway 176. Bring drinking water, good hiking shoes and field guide books for this 1.5 mile walk. With stops, the walk will take about two hours.

The walk will be limited to 15 people so make reservations to attend early.
