Ewan Scott shot a 4-under-par 68 to lead the University of Tennessee at Chattanooga men's golf team to a third-place 286 in the first round Friday of the Tar Heel Intercollegiate tournament at Chapel Hill, N.C. The Mocs are tied with Virginia Commonwealth and East Carolina, four shots behind UNC Charlotte and 13 behind host North Carolina, in the 18-team event. Scott is fifth individually. UTC's Liam Johnston is tied for 30th at 72, one shot better than teammates Wes Gosselin and Brooks Thomas.

• Former UTC golf standout Steven Fox is tied for fifth at 15-under-par 201 going into the final round of the Island View Casino Championship at Gulfport, Miss. It's part of the eGolf Tour. Fox opened Wednesday with a 67 and followed with a 66 and a 68. Dustin Bray of Charleston, S.C., leads at 196. Also at 201 is former Tennessee Volunteer David Skinns.

Volleyball

• The UTC volleyball team rallied to defeat Wright State 3-2 (20-25, 25-18, 22-25, 25-17, 15-9) as the Chattanooga Classic presented by Hampton Inn & Suites opened Friday at Maclellan Gym. Sarah Batterton had 16 kills and Kristy Wieser had 12 kills, 22 digs and three aces for the Mocs (3-6), and Anne Bachman and Lauren Greenspoon had 32 and 20 assists while Catherine Chason and Brianna Guzinski contributed 28 and 22 digs. Allie Davenport added 10 kills. Haley Garr, Katie Klusman and Megan Hopkins had 11 kills apiece for Wright State (2-7), and Maddie Lohmeier had 45 assists and 17 digs.

• Despite 12 kills apiece by Patty Orozco and Blaire Beamer and 11 plus 26 assists by Erin Hill, the Lee University volleyball team lost 3-1 (23-25, 30-28, 25-21, 27-25) Friday night to visiting Valdosta State. Haley Foote had 17 assists and Stephanie Hernandez had 19 digs for Lee (0-2), with Latrice Johnson and Marija Martinovic adding 13 and 11 digs. Jenna Kirkwood had 19 kills and Jessica Codato had 35 assists, nine kills and 10 digs for VSU (4-0).

Soccer

• Taylor Blazie assisted on a goal by Katie Phillips and scored from a Zoie Hensley assist as Tennessee Tech edged UTC 2-1 in women's soccer Friday night at Finley Stadium. Abby Linder scored from a Clare Latham assist at 85:06 for the Mocs (1-5), who were outshot 17-9.

• Kaela Leskovar scored two goals and Kinsey Cichowitz scored in between as Lee University beat visiting Findlay 3-0 in women's soccer Friday night. Kathryn Healy and Nicole Blanchard had assists on the first-half goals for Lee (1-2), which outshot Findlay (2-1) 17-9. The Lee men went to 3-0-1 with a 3-1 defeat of Palm Beach Atlantic in Florida as David Perez scored twice and Quade Marinell scored from a Gabe Franco assist. Tom Halsall made 11 saves.

• A Corrie Thomas goal 11:56 in held up for a 1-0 Shorter women's soccer win Friday at Tennessee Wesleyan. The match was shortened by seven minutes.

Baseball

• Boyd-Buchanan senior Josh Antwine signed Thursday to continue his baseball carer at Tennessee Temple University. He wanted to get his decision out of the way before his final season with the Buccaneers, and he picked Temple over Bryan, Young Harris and colleges in Missouri and Pennsylvania. "It had a lot to do with being a smaller school and a Christian school and being close to my parents, and Coach [Greg] Bartley is a real great guy. I want to spend the next four years playing for a guy I can look up to and respect," said Antwine, a 6-foot-3, 165-pounder who batted .338 with an on-base percentage of .520 last spring. He caught for the Bucs and "also can play on the dirt or in the outfield," said Bartley, who saw him this summer as a pitcher. "He's got a lot of upside. He'll probably play somewhere in the field as well as pitching, and he can hit it pretty good," the coach added. "He's just a good all-around athlete, and he's a high-academic and high-character guy."

Field Hockey

• After three road losses, the Sewanee field hockey team erupted for a 9-0 win in its home opener Friday against Ferrum. Sarah Barry scored the first two goals of the match and Kat Mulligan scored the first two of the second half, and Allegra Massey-Elim matched Mulligan with two goals and an assist. Kya Wence, Virginia Barry and Catherine Estes also scored for the Tigers, who outshot their guests 36-1, and Zuie Billings had two assists.

Running

• The Dalton State men's cross country team finished second to NCAA Division II member Columbus State in the Bobcat Invitational meet hosted by Georgia College and State University on Friday in Milledgeville. The DSC women were fourth behind three Division II schools, the hosts, Columbus State and Augusta. Nine of the male Roadrunners finished in the top 25 of the four-mile field of 61, led by Spencer Head in fifth place at 21:16:64. Teammates Paul Patterson, Isaac Pacheco, Brody Cook, Paul Schupp and Jacob Robinson were 12th through 16th. Dalton State freshmen Gloria Pascual and Kuersten Gallivan were seventh and ninth in the women's two-mile race.
