2 Alabama women sentenced after toddler severely burned

MONTGOMERY, Ala. - Two Montgomery women have been sentenced after authorities say a toddler in their care suffered third- and fourth-degree burns after a bath.

Court records state that Linda Holmes and Contense Gilbert said they gave the 16-month-old boy a bath while babysitting him and then noticed his skin starting to peel. They told authorities that they tried to treat his skin, but his skin began to fall off.

Authorities say the women brought the boy to a Montgomery emergency room on Aug. 9, 2013, and the child had burns over 35 percent of his body.

WSFA-TV reports that Holmes was sentenced to 15 years in the Alabama Department of Corrections.

Gilbert was sentenced to serve two years in prison and 12 months supervised probation plus mental health treatment.
