Capture filmmakers ready to roll - Sept. 19-21

photo Filmmaker Denny Tedesco will be the special guest for this weekend's Capture: A Community Filmmaking Project. His film "The Wrecking Crew," about a group of studio rock musicians, will be screened at Friday night's kickoff.

This weekend is "lights, camera, action" for Capture: A Community Filmmaking Project. And after a whirlwind 48 hours, directors with the Association for Visual Arts will be ready to strike the set, if only symbolically.

Taking place over two days, Capture begins at 5:30 p.m. Friday, Sept. 19, at Bessie Smith Cultural Center, 200 E. M.L. King Blvd., where registered participants will gather for the theme reveal and instructions. They'll then have the next 24 hours to capture footage based on a Chattanooga-related theme. Anyone with access to a digital HD camera or smartphone (iPhone, Droid, etc.) can participate. Cost is $10 to upload your video clips to the filmmaker teams.

On Saturday, Sept. 21, the footage will be turned over to three professional editing teams, who will edit the submitted imagery to make three mini-documentaries scored by area musicians.

The project concludes Sunday, Sept. 21, with a celebratory community screening featuring an awards presentation and live music at the Carmike Majestic Theatre, 311 Broad St. Tickets are $15 (discounts for participating videographers).

As part of Friday's kickoff, AVA will welcome Denny Tedesco for a Q&A and an exclusive screening of his film "The Wrecking Crew." Sign-ups to submit Capture video begin at 5:30 p.m., and the film screening will follow at 7 p.m. Admission to the screening is free, but seating is first-come, first-served.

"The Wrecking Crew" chronicles the studio work of a group of musicians who are little known to people outside the recording studios. From the 1950s through the 1960s, The Wrecking Crew recorded studio sessions with a wide array of chart-topping soloists and bands including Elvis, The Monkees, Dean Martin, Association, Sonny & Cher, The Mamas & The Papas, The Beach Boys and Glen Campbell, to name but a few. Tedesco's father, Tommy Tedesco, was a guitarist with The Wrecking Crew.
