CEDARTOWN, Ga. - Authorities say a Polk County sheriff's deputy fatally shot a man wielding a knife and a baseball bat.
Polk County Sheriff Johnny Moats tells WSB-TV the deputy answered a call at a home in Cedartown around 6 p.m. Friday. A relative told the deputy the man was "acting crazy" and "tearing things up."
Northwestgeorgianews.com reports the man was identified as 18-year-old Levi Weaver.
Moats says the deputy, Jerry Shellhouse, opened fire when Weaver approached with a baseball bat and a knife. Weaver died after suffering a gunshot wound to the chest. No one else was hurt.
Moats says Shellhouse, the chief jail administrator, heard the call over his radio and responded because other officers were busy.
The Georgia Bureau of Investigation is looking into the shooting.
