Attempted kidnapping suspect leaves fate up to Knox County judge

A teenager who tried to kidnap a fellow college student at gunpoint is putting his fate into the hands of a Knox County judge.

In an unusual move, Gregory Devere Crenshaw, 19, entered what's known as a blind plea Monday in Knox County Criminal Court to charges of attempted aggravated kidnapping and two counts of aggravated burglary. He also agreed to skip a grand jury review.

Under a blind plea, a defendant makes no sentencing deal with prosecutors and instead leaves the decision on his or her fate up to a judge. The only agreement crafted between the Knox County District Attorney General's Office and defense attorney Phil Lomonaco is that whatever sentence Judge Bob McGee imposes for the June kidnapping bid will be stacked onto the penalty he receives for two unrelated burglaries.
