Q: I never had problems with allergies as a child. Why do I have allergy symptoms now that I am an adult?

A: Allergies can affect all age groups. Many people believe most allergies are developed during childhood; however, half of allergic diseases develop in adulthood. Adults can develop allergies to many things, including pollen, food, dust mites, mold and pet dander. One of the most common food allergies to occur in adulthood is to shellfish which can elicit severe reactions. Another allergy condition that can occur early or late in life is oral allergy syndrome which can develop among people allergic to pollen and is due to a protein in produce such as apples and melons. While the condition is not typically severe, you can get a tingling or burning sensation in your mouth after eating your favorite fruit or vegetable. Some patients have what appears to be random anaphylaxis, which is a life-threatening allergic reaction. Researchers discovered some of these reactions are caused by a delayed allergy to red meat such as beef or pork or other mammalian meat. It's important to see a board-certified allergist if you suspect you have an allergy to red meat, because the most important step is an accurate diagnosis.
