The Transportation Security Administration found and confiscated a loaded .45 caliber pistol at the security checkpoint at Chattanooga Metropolitan Airport this morning, according to a news release.

The pistol was found at about 8:15 a.m. in a passenger's carry-on bag. TSA officers alerted airport police, who seized the bag and cited the passenger on local charges.

While firearms may be transported in checked baggage (provided they are declared to the airline, in a proper carrying case and unloaded) they are prohibited in carry-on bags, according to the TSA.

TSA officers at the airport have discovered eight firearms in passenger carry-on bags in 2014. A total of six were found at the CHA checkpoint in 2013, the release states.
