Courter: Things I wish my kids would ask me

Editor's note: Barry Courter has a 25-year-old son who is a college graduate and a 20-year-old daughter who is a junior in college.

Q: Dad, they had a career day here at school with a bunch of reps from businesses on campus. Any advice on standing out with the one I want?

A: Well, it's good you think you want just one, but be open to anything. Do some research on several ahead of time so you have two or three intelligent questions. Look the rep in the eye and give him or her a firm handshake. That goes a long way with anybody. Bring an updated resume. Dress professionally. Get a business card and send a thank-you note or email. Act like you've been there before.
