Central High School's Reggie Long is No. 1 among Tennessee high school seniors going into the 2014-15 bowling season, according to www.tennesseeprepbowling.com. Long is the only area bowler among the top 20 12th-grade boys, while Walker Valley's Alexis Rutledge and Kara Davidson are 12th and 19th in the preseason senior girls' list. Walker Valley's Briton Helton, Caleb Zanoska and Tanner Kincaid are Nos. 7, 10 and 18 in the junior boys' rankings, where Tullahoma's Kyle Dotson is sixth and Soddy-Daisy's Matthew Long is 14th, and Soddy-Daisy's Sara Taylor is sixth among the 11th-grade girls. Rhea County's Jessica Hawk is No. 12 in the sophomore girls' rankings, and Rhea's Dustin Osborne is 14th in the boys' list.

Soccer

• Samford University sophomore Malcanisha Kelley scored two goals in the Bulldogs' 3-0 soccer victory over the University of Tennessee at Chattanooga on Sunday at Finley Stadium. It was the 2014 Southern Conference opener for both teams. Kelley scored the game-winner just 4:12 into the match from a Virginia McNeill assist. Jermaine Seoposenwe made the pass setting up Kelley's 13th collegiate goal in the 63rd minute, and Ariane Lukens scored in the 49th from a Taylor Borman assist. Samford (6-5 overall), which is coached by Todd Yelton, the brother of Lee University women's coach Matt Yelton, had margins of 29-6 in shots and 7-1 in corner kicks. Hannah Dunn made 15 saves for UTC (1-8-1).

• The Lee women's soccer team improved to 3-0 in Gulf South Conference play with a 1-0 win Sunday at Valdosta State. Kinsey Cichowitz scored from a Kaela Leskovar cross through the box at 56:56 for the Lady Flames (4-3-1 overall). Valdosta State (3-4, 2-1) had a 12-9 edge in shots. Lee's Erin Olson made six saves.

Volleyball

• The Sewanee volleyball team lost twice on Sunday, losing in five sets (25-10, 24-26, 25-19, 21-25, 15-12) against Oglethorpe and being swept 25-14, 25-12, 25-13 against Emory in matches in Atlanta. Diamond Stewart and Jamie Sue Wilson led the Tigers with 15 kills each agains Oglethorpe, while Rachel Shuman had 14 assits and Walker Buxton had 13.

• Rachel Harper from Boyd-Buchanan had 17 kills and nine digs and Kristen Pickett from Cleveland High had 46 assists and 15 digs as Carson-Newman won 3-1 in South Atlantic Conference volleyball Saturday at Lenoir-Rhyne. Harper has 1,017 kills for her college career. CNU is 10-3, 6-0.

Golf

• The Lee University women's golf team finished seventh out of 16 teams Sunday in the Lander Lady Bearcat tournament at Bluffton, S.C. Lee senior Madison Alexander led the Lady Flames, who posted the third best final round at 300. Alexander shot a 72 on Sunday, and teammate Bernadette Little tied for fourth place overall at 147.

Tennis

• Girls Preparatory School graduate Danielle Simms is one of four freshmen who made the women's tennis team at Brandeis University, an NCAA Division III school in the Boston area that is in the same conference with Emory, the University of Chicago and Washington University, among other academic heavyweights. Simms had to earn her spot in tryouts this month. She was a lineup regular for three years for GPS.

Field Hockey

• Sarah Barry and Virginia Barry each scored two goals and assisted on one as the Sewanee field hockey team won 4-0 Sunday at Transylvania. Sarah opened the scoring with a Virginia assist at 35:00 for the Tigers (3-5), who outshot their Lexington, Ky., hosts 28-3.

Rugby

• The Nooga Rugby club will hold open tryouts Tuesday from 6:45 to 9 p.m. at Montague Park. The club is coming off a regional championship season in which it reached the round of 16 in the playoffs and a national No. 9 ranking in Division 2 rugby, but new blood is always welcome. No experience is necessary, but candidates must be at least 21 years old and bring cleats, a mouthpiece and water. See www.noogarugby.com for more information.
