Hamilton County Schools will be closed Thursday, Jan. 24 because of weather conditions.

Rain is forecast to last through the evening and freezing conditions to follow after 2 a.m. in the higher elevations of Hamilton County, according to a news release.

Schools will be closed, athletic events will be rescheduled and practices canceled Thursday evening.

School-aged child-care will be available from 8 a.m. to 6 p.m. at seven locations: Battle Academy, East Ridge Elementary, Red Bank Elementary, Harrison Elementary, Middle Valley Elementary, Wolftever Creek Elementary and East Brainerd Elementary.

Twelve-month employees are to report to work as scheduled.

"The district will take the opportunity to perform extra cleaning and sanitizing for flu and illness prevention in light of flu outbreaks in surrounding communities," according to a press release.

Chattanooga Preparatory School also announced Wednesday that they will be closed Thursday because of the threat of inclement weather.

Marion County and Grundy County Schools also announced Wednesday that they will be closed Thursday and Friday due to widespread illness.

Polk County Schools also had to close last week due to illness, but the district has not announced any school closures yet this week. Hamilton County school officials say the district has continued to see strong attendance numbers despite the flu and sick season.
