NASHVILLE — Republican U.S. Rep. Chuck Fleischmann is aiming his third straight televised punch at GOP challenger Weston Wamp with a new ad in which both men's 2012 rival, Scottie Mayfield, directly takes Wamp to task over secretly recording him last spring.

NASHVILLE — State elections officials are urging people to vote early in the Aug. 7 election, saying the lengthy ballot will generate long lines on Election Day.

The Hamilton County district attorney will have to decide whether a recent absentee ballot flap in the Hamilton County Commission District 6 race was a misguided attempt at being helpful by a campaign volunteer or an intentional effort to manipulate election results.

ATLANTA — Businessman David Perdue has defeated longtime Rep. Jack Kingston in the Republican runoff for Georgia's U.S. Senate nomination, setting up a matchup against Democratic nominee Michelle Nunn that will help determine which party controls the Senate for the final years of the Obama administration.

The runoff election for Georgia’s District 1 House of Representatives, which includes the western part of Walker County and all of Dade County, had Republican incumbent John Deffenbaugh winning with 55 percent of the vote with all votes counted.

For the first time this election cycle, 3rd District Congressional candidate Mary Headrick shared a stage with the Republican she will face in November — although voters will decide in about two weeks whether that will be incumbent U.S. Rep. Chuck Fleischmann or challenger Weston Wamp.

NASHVILLE — The National Rifle Association's political arm has endorsed U.S. Rep. Scott DesJarlais, R-Tenn., in Tennessee's 4th Congressional District GOP primary and is wishing him "good luck with your campaign."

Early voting in the Aug. 7 primary continues at the following locations: • Hamilton County Election Commission, 700 River Terminal Road, off Amnicola Highway. Monday-Friday, 8 a.m. to 6 p.m., and Saturday from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m.
