'Seussical: The Musical' at Chattanooga State

"Seussical," a musical based on the works of Dr. Seuss, will be presented by the Chattanooga State Theatre and Music Departments in three performances this weekend.

Written by Lynn Ahrens and Stephen Flaherty, "Seussical" is one of the most performed shows in America. It features the many characters from such books as "The Cat in the Hat," "Horton the Elephant," "Thing 1 and Thing 2," "Gertrude McFuzz" and "Yertle the Turtle."

"This is a musical for all ages, a show that transforms depending on your point of view," said director Jeffrey Parker. "Young viewers will be captivated by the bright colors, the catchy tunes and seeing their favorite characters onstage. Teenagers will identify with the themes of isolation, of self-discovery and the hope of reconciliation. Parents will identify with Horton's fierce desire to protect those he loves, even going so far as to raise someone else's child."

In addition to the all-ages themes, the production has the signature look and sound associated with the rhyming works of Theodor Seuss Geisel, brought to life by a cast of 18.

"The music is brilliant, the choreography is stunning, and the sets and costumes are radiant," Parker said. "I still get tears in my eyes when I hear 'Alone in the Universe' and still break out into a grin when I hear 'Think!' "

Allan Ledford serves as musical director. Lindsay Fussell is the choreographer. Cast members Terrance Wright and Amy Henricks double as assistant choreographers.
