A documentary about a Signal Mountain High School student who struggles with autism will premier today, May 9, at 7 p.m. in Walker Pavilion at Coolidge Park, 150 River St. A second screening of "Stacey" will be shown at 7 p.m. Friday, May 10 in the Signal Mountain High School theater, 2650 Sam Powell Drive.

Admission is free to both screenings.

Stacey Rice is a senior at SMHS. The short documentary examines various aspects of his life in dealing with his autistic disorder, including insight into his past, his present and possibilities for his future. The film also looks at how others view him and how he both survives and thrives in his world.

"Stacey" was conceptualized, written, shot and edited by a group of students from Signal Mountain High School. It was produced through the Association for Visual Arts' Reel Stories Documentary Program, which pairs a filmmaker with a group of high school students to learn about documentary filmmaking and how to create and produce their own short documentary video.

In its six years, The Reel Stories Documentary Program has worked with five local public high schools and exposed numerous students to the art and experience of documentary filmmaking and utilizing media arts to let their voices be heard.
