Moody, Maryville choirs visiting

Spring tours will bring choirs from Maryville College in Maryville, Tenn., and Moody Bible Institute in Chicago to the region next week.

* Sunday and Monday: The Maryville College Concert Choir will perform three concerts in Chattanooga as part of its annual spring-break tour, a tradition for students since the 1940s.

At 7 p.m. Sunday, the choir will perform at Rivermont Presbyterian Church, 3319 Hixson Pike. Call 877-8527 for more information.

On Monday, the choir will spend the morning at Chattanooga School for the Arts and Sciences and the afternoon at Baylor School.

The theme of the 2011 tour is "The Road Not Taken." Choir members selected the theme because they will perform Randall Thompson's choir arrangement "The Road Not Taken," which is based on the poem by Robert Frost, said Stacey Wilner, coordinator of choral music at Maryville College.

Also on the program are the late Moses Hogan's arrangement of "Swing Low, Sweet Chariot," Daniel Gawthrop's "Sing Me to Heaven" and a Cameroon melody, "Praise, Praise, Praise the Lord."

Vocal ensemble Off Kilter will perform, among other arrangements, "The Banana Boat Song," made famous by Harry Belafonte, and Bobby McFerrin's 1988 hit "Don't Worry, Be Happy."

* Monday and Tuesday: The Moody Symphonic Band's swing through the South will include a concert Monday in Spring City, Tenn., and Tuesday in Chattanooga.

Monday's concert, which is hosted by Spring City Baptist Church, will be at 7 p.m. at Spring City Middle School, 751 Wassom Memorial Highway. Call 423-365-5546 or 365-9105 for more information.

Tuesday's concert will start at 6:30 p.m. at Ridgedale Baptist Church, 1831 Hickory Valley Road. Call 899-0094 for more information.

Founded in 1970, the Moody Symphonic Band is composed of students from Moody's undergraduate school. Their repertoire includes band and orchestral concert music, as well as hymn and gospel song arrangements in traditional and contemporary styles.
