It's Labor Day weekend, the typical end of featured entertainment on the Jukebox Junction Stage at Lake Winnepesaukah. But this year, Lake Winnie bookers aren't quite ready to call it quits.
In a break from tradition, country band Confederate Railroad will play its regular slot on Sunday, but Colt Fold, the hick-hop artist who opened the series on June 5, will close the season with an encore performance on Sept. 18.
Confederate Railroad will perform twice Sunday, at 3 and 8 p.m. Fronted by Danny Shirley, Confederate Railroad carved its niche in music with a high-energy combination of honky-tonk rockers and sensitive ballads.
Besides Shirley on vocals and guitar, the current lineup features Mark DuFresne on drums, Wayne Secrest on bass, Rusty Hendrix on lead guitar and Bobby Randall on steel guitar.
The band's first single, "She Took It Like a Man," made it to only No. 26 on the country charts, but the next two singles, "Jesus and Mama" and "Queen of Memphis," sailed to the top.
Three more -- "Trashy Women," "When You Leave That Way You Can Never Go Back" and "She Never Cried" -- gave them a half-dozen hits from their first album.
Hits on their second album -- "Daddy Never Was the Cadillac Kind," "Elvis and Andy" and "When and Where" -- further established the band.
