First crop of corn mazes opens Saturday, Thursday

A-maze-ing corn crops are expected to yield plenty of visitors this fall at several farms around the region.

Here's a look at the first three corn mazes scheduled to open.

GRANDADDY'S FARM

Address: 454 Highland Ridge Road, Estill Springs, Tenn. (near Winchester).

Season: Saturday through Oct. 31. Open 1:30-6 p.m. Tuesday-Thursday, 1:30-10 p.m. Fridays, 9 a.m.-10 p.m. Saturdays (farm will be open Halloween). Field trips by reservation.

Theme: "Famous Pigs."

Highlights: Corn maze; tile, rope and straw mazes; hayrides (moonlight rides at 6:30, 7:30 and 8:30 p.m. Fridays and Saturdays); pumpkin picking; gourd trellis tunnel; animal barn; nature trail; pig and duck races; tire mountain; goat walk; tire swings; 40-foot hillside slide; playground; picnic shelter.

ROCK CITY'S ENCHANTED MAIZE

Address: Blowing Springs Farm, 271 Chattanooga Valley Road, just south of St. Elmo.

Season: Thursday through Oct. 30. Open 9 a.m.-6:30 p.m. Thursdays, 9 a.m.-8 p.m. Fridays, 10:30 a.m.-8 p.m. Saturdays and noon-6:30 p.m. Sundays in September. In October, maze closes at 6 p.m. Fridays and Saturdays for Blowing Screams Farm haunted attractions.

Theme: "Coca-Cola."

Highlights: Hayrides, bean bag toss, kids cow train and playground open daily. Limited schedule of corn slingshot, inflatables, pumpkin painting and Fairyland Forest makeovers. Bring empty plastic bottles to help build the Re-Maze (good for $1 off coupon).

THE RIVER MAZE

Address: 1371 Highway 64, Ocoee, Tenn. (11 miles east of Cleveland, Tenn.).

Season: Saturday through Oct. 30. Open 5-10 p.m. Fridays, 11 a.m.-10 p.m. Saturdays, 1-5 p.m. Sundays. Weekday field trips by reservation.

Admission: $10 ages 13 and older, $8 ages 4-12 (comes with one token). Admission includes corn maze, soybean maze, color maze, no-left-turn maze, hayride, barnyard croquet, Pumpkin Hotshot basketball game, corn toss, corn ball and corn fusion navigation game. Additional charge for water wars, capture the corn, cow train and corn cannon. Portion of proceeds goes to Candlelighters, a support group for families of children with cancer.

Theme: "Peace Like a River."

New this year: Mystery at The River Maze, a scavenger hunt based on the board game Clue, and Pumpkin Hotshot, a basketball shoot based on Spookley, the Square Pumpkin, the official spokespumpkin for National Bullying Prevention Month.

Other attractions: Displays of baby calves, sheep and goats; goat-walk platform to feed the goats; practice cows for milking; river trail; pumpkin picking; gift shop; bonfires; concessions.
