Guided bicycle rides through Chickamauga Battlefield begin this month, with the first offered at 9:30 a.m. Saturday, May 18.

The summer series of free, historical bike tours is presented by the Chickamauga and Chattanooga National Military Park and Outdoor Chattanooga.

Participants may bring their own bicycle or reserve a free loaner from the Outdoor Chattanooga fleet by calling the Chickamauga Battlefield Visitor Center at 706-866-9241. Bikes will fit riders who are 5 feet or taller.

The leisurely paced rides take about two hours, covering three to four miles on flat to moderately hilly terrain. Park rangers will talk about the history of the battlefield while Outdoor Chattanooga staff and volunteers provide ride leadership and support.

Rides are appropriate for adults and chaperoned children 8 and older. All participants are required to wear helmets.

Additional Saturday battlefield bicycle tours are scheduled for June 15, July 20, Aug. 17, Sept. 21 and Oct. 19.
