Knives and 'shine: Dalton show focuses on blades, 'Moonshiner' star - March 7-9

Wayne "Hillbilly" Nix, featured on Season 3 of Discovery Channel's "Moonshiners" will be among the draws at this weekend's Knife Roadshow at the Northwest Georgia Trade & Convention Center, 2211 Dug Gap Battle Road in Dalton.

According to Spirit of Steel Promotions, the Roadshow continues a tradition begun in 1977 when the National Knife Collectors Association originated a national show in the Chattanooga area. When the NKCA stopped producing knife shows, the Knife Roadshow took up the cause.

Still sanctioned by the NKCA, the annual show features "anything with a blade," including vintage pocketknives, modern handmade knives, the latest production knives, commemoratives and limited editions.

Collectors are encouraged to bring their own knives for sale or trade with exhibitors from across the U.S., and free appraisals will be available. Several top knife collections will be on display as well.

Although the focus is on knives, organizers say visitors are welcome to bring ammo and high-capacity magazines to sell or trade as well.

Show hours are noon-5 p.m. Friday, March 7; 9 a.m.-5 p.m. Saturday, March 8; and 9 a.m-2 p.m. Sunday, March 9.

Nix, of Hanging Dog Moonshine near Murphy, N.C., will sign autographs and sell souvenirs such as T-shirts, hats, jars and photos of his still. He will be available from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturday.

Admission is $6 to $8.

Friday night gate proceeds will be donated in total to the National Knife Museum, formerly in Chattanooga and now operating in leased space within Smoky Mountain Knife Works in Sevierville. The not-for-profit organization, which sees 30,000 visitors each year, exists solely on donations.
