Although some pack away their gear after the summer months, camping in the fall is perfect for those who relish the thought of cooler hikes and fewer pesky bugs. Not to mention, now that the kids are back in school, there will be much less foot traffic and much more space to make camp. Nighttime at campgrounds is quieter in the offseason, as well, which makes for an excellent opportunity for peaceful stargazing.

While fall camping is an exciting time for the cool weather-inclined, the chill can bring with it some unpleasant side effects if you are not prepared with the right gear. Days can easily reach highs in the low 70s, but after dark the temperature can drop to the mid 40s or lower. Be sure to stock up on fall weather-friendly items such as a sleeping pad to keep the chill of the ground at bay and merino wool base layers to keep you warm and comfortable during your trip.

Don't worry your pretty little head. The actual amount of heat lost is about 10 percent; no more than if you were to forgo your gloves.

Love the Layers

Autumn weather can be fairly unpredictable, so it is important to be prepared for both the heat and the cold. For easy adaptability to whatever Mother Nature may throw at you, just remember: layers, layers, layers. Thrift stores are a great option for adding extra layers of clothing that you won't mind getting dirty.
