While there's still plenty of fishing to be done in the winter months, many anglers take a little break during the winter months. During this slower time, it's a good idea to do some needed maintenance of your fishing gear so that you'll be ready to hit the water when warmer weather arrives in the not-too-distant future.

Here's a handy list to get started:

Empty your tackle box: Make a careful assessment of all your fishing equipment and get rid of items that are no longer useful. Look for lures that are worn out or broken beyond repair. Dump that bag of crusty artificial worms, and throw out those rusty hooks. If you're not going to use it in the next few months, get rid of it.

Restock your tackle box: After you've cleared out all the useless junk, now comes the fun part. Make a list of lures and equipment you'll need in the next few months, and start checking your local fishing supply store for good deals on gear during the coming months. If you're a fly-fisherman and tie your own flies, now is the perfect time to get to work preparing a new set of flies.

Rod and reel repair: Your fishing rods and reels are the most crucial piece of fishing equipment you own, but too often they get the least amount of attention. Take some time to look for damage to your rods and reels and try to make some repairs to damaged line guides, and check to see if your reels are operating smoothly. This is also a perfect time to break down and clean your reels and put on new line.

Plan a trip: Now that you've got your fishing gear cleaned up and ready to go, make plans for the first big trip of the spring or late winter. With Chattanooga's relatively mild climate, there's usually a few days a month for good fishing year-round. Check the weather for a nice day and get out to your favorite lake, river or stream.
