AEC announces Young Writers winners

More than 5,000 area students in grades K-12 entered this year's Young Southern Student Writers Program, sponsored by the Arts and Education Council of Chattanooga.

Tuesday night, 472 students were recognized as winners in poetry and prose during an awards ceremony held in the Tivoli Theatre. Honorees were chosen by faculty of the English Department of the University of Tennessee at Chattanooga.

The young writers program was established in 1999 as an outreach of the AEC Conference on Southern Literature.

"When this program started 10 years ago, we received 500 entries and picked 50 winners," said Dr. Verbie Prevost, head of the UTC English Department and director of the program for young writers.

Each honoree received a medal and an anthology comprised of all winners' entries, said Laurel Eldridge, AEC spokeswoman.
