More than 400 Civil War soldiers are interred at West Hill Cemetery in Dalton, Ga., according to historians. This weekend, some of their stories, as well as those of other historical figures from the time period, will be recounted by re-enactors in a Spirit Walk.

Organizers say rather than a "haunted" tour of the cemetery, Spirit Walk is a walking history lesson. Local and national writers have created scripts, and actors from Dalton Little Theatre will bring 11 characters to life, all with stories that focus on Dalton's role in the Civil War.

"There were so many to choose from," said Michelle Bartenfeld, public relations chairman for the theater. "Our area is rich in that kind of heritage."

She said Dalton attorney Bob Jenkins, who is knowledgeable of the history, served as a resource for organizers.

"He was able to pull out people from the area who were relevant to the time period, people who did wonderful things, heroic things, unusual things."

This weekend's Spirit Walk is not a repeat of Spirit Walks held last summer and fall but will focus on different historical figures. Both of those events were sellouts, and Bartenfeld expects this one will be as well. Spring has the added bonus of mild weather and flowers in bloom. "The cemetery is beautiful right now," she said.

Eleven tours are scheduled, with each accommodating up to 25 people. Each tour will conclude with social time in the West Hill Chapel, where more re-enactors will mingle with guests and answer questions, she said. Light refreshments will be served.

Advance reservations are required. Attendees are asked to arrive 15 minutes before their scheduled tour time and to dress for walking across uneven terrain.
