Courter: Things I wish my kids would ask me

Editor's note: Barry Courter has a 25-year-old son who is a college graduate and a 20-year-old daughter who is a sophomore in college.

Q: Dad, what are your thoughts on home do-it-yourself projects?

A: Ah, a topic with which I am very familiar. I think I have done them all: auto repair, plumbing, electrical, painting, drywall and appliance repair. My best advice is to make enough money so you can pay someone else to do it. My next advice is to buy the best product you can on the front end. If you must do the repairs yourself, study the process before you take anything apart, and make sure the parts store is open while you are working. Never start a plumbing job on a Sunday morning, for example, unless you are certain you have the parts on hand.
