June Days in Englewood a 27-year tradition

A tradition in Englewood, Tenn., since Lamar Alexander was governor returns this weekend.

June Days in Englewood, which started as part of the statewide Homecoming '86 celebrations, will offer a pancake breakfast, antique tractor show, live music, carriage rides, motorcycle run, food and craft vendors, children's activities and a street dance on Saturday, June 29. The celebration winds up Sunday evening, June 30, with a community church service.

"For a little town of 1,600, there's a lot of churches," explains Gail Anderson, a member of the Community Action Group of Englewood.

"All of the churches come, and each has something they do," she says of the service. The featured entertainment will be the Athens, Tenn.-based group Our Three Tenors. The service starts at 6 p.m. at First Baptist Church of Englewood, 13 Church St.

Saturday's celebration will be a dawn-to-dusk affair, with the pancake breakfast starting at 7 a.m. and the street dance starting at 7 p.m. The High Strung Band will play, the musicians moving their regular gig from Baker's Place, a dance hall on Highway 411, to the festival site downtown.

The Englewood Textile Museum and the adjacent Company Store, 17 S. Niota St., will be open for visitors. The museum pays tribute to the women who worked in the former mill town.

"We were a sock town at one time," Anderson says, "but there are no mills now at all."
