Bradley County: Commissioners seek meeting with Cleveland council over tax revenue dispute

CLEVELAND, Tenn. - Bradley County commissioners today asked Cleveland City Council members to meet with them Tuesday in a last-ditch effort to resolve a two-year dispute over sharing the extra sales tax revenue approved by voters in 2009.

The case goes to Chancery Court Thursday.

"We will try one last time," said Commissioner Brian Smith, who made the motion approved by all 14 commissioners.

Before the commission's session today, Cleveland Mayor Tom Rowland conducted a special City Council meeting. The purpose was to vote on whether to override Rowland's veto last week of a resolution seeking extended negotiating time.

Only two council members, Avery Johnson and David May, attended, so there was no quorum and no vote could be taken. The veto remains.

Rowland did have a statement, however, that he was "surprised and disappointed" by County Commission Chairman Louie Alford's statement Sunday. Alford said he was "disappointed with the city's lack of interest in working towards a compromise."
