Chattanooga Police: Second suspect charged in attempted murder case

An attempted murder suspect is in custody now after he was arrested in Knoxville Monday, according to Chattanooga Police Department.

Tony Phillips, 23, was taken into custody at 2300 Center Ave. by U.S. Marshall Service, Knoxville Police Department and Chattanooga Police Fugitive Unit, said Sgt. Jerri Weary. His next court date is set for Dec. 13 in General Sessions Court Judge Bob Moon's courtroom.

Phillips was arrested in connection to the shooting of 35-year-old Johnny Tripp at 719 E. 49th St. on Nov. 20. Tripp was shot numerous times in the chest and legs.

Chattanooga police responded to three shootings with injuries on that date. To date, there have been 86 shooting incidents resulting in death or injury, according to records kept by the Times Free Press.

Tripp told investigators he was sitting on the porch of a residence when he was approached by two men who pulled guns and began shooting at him. Both suspects got into a black Chevy Cavalier and fled the scene.

Phillips is the second person arrested in the case. Corey Ball, 22, also faces an attempted murder charge. Ball was arrested in Ringgold, Ga. and remains in custody. His next court date is set for Nov. 20 in General Sessions Court Judge Bob Moon's courtroom.
