Sewanee cutting tuition by 10 percent

The University of the South has approved a 10 percent price cut to tuition and fees, a $4,600 reduction to the current year's total, school officials announced this morning.

The decision to lower tuition at Sewanee this fall will be in stark contrast with the increasing tuition trends at most public and private universities across the country.

"Higher education is on the verge of pricing itself beyond the reach of more and more families," said John M. McCardell Jr., Sewanee's vice-chancellor and president. "The reduction in tuition at Sewanee recognizes today's new economic realities and the pressures that families face."

This year, the University of the South received more than 3,000 applications, and expects to enroll about 425 freshmen in the fall.
