Police: Chattanooga man beats boy with Tiki torch

A man was arrested for domestic assault after he beat his girlfriend's 7-year-old son with a Tiki torch.

Police responded to a call about 6 p.m. of a man beating a child with a stick. When officers arrived they located the boy and found that the child had bruises on his back, bottom and chest, according to a news release.

James Cooper, 28, told police that he was disciplining the boy for doing something wrong. According to the release, Cooper admitted to police that he spanked the child but didn't believe he left any bruises.

Cooper was arrested and the child was left in the care of his mother but police said Child Protective Services and investigators with the department will conduct a follow-up investigation.
