Hamilton County School Board member Everett Fairchild will be resigning in March.

Fairchild, who represents the Hixson and Middle Valley areas in District 3, sent a letter to School Board Chairman Mike Evatt and several county commissioners, announcing his intent to step down on March 15.

"He's had a good long time of service and I hate to see him go," said District 3 Commissioner Mitch McClure.

Fairchild, a longtime educator and former principal of Hixson Junior High School, was elected to the city school board in 1993 and served as its chairman. After the systems merged, he was appointed in 1997 to the county school board.

He was most recently elected in 2010.

County Commission Chairman Larry Henry said the commission will likely appoint a replacement for Fairchild within the next three months. By state law, the commission is responsible for filling school board vacancies.
