A ten-year-old has passed away after the boat she was riding in on Chickamauga Lake overturned during severe weather Thursday evening.The second person trapped under an overturned pontoon boat Thursday night on Chickamauga Lake has died, Tennessee Wildlife Resource Agency spokesman Dan Hicks said.
The woman and her 10-year-old granddaughter were trapped when the boat was flipped by high winds in Thursday night's thunderstorm, authorities have said.
Friends and neighbors tried to save them and got 10 other people who were on the boat safely to shore, a local witness said in an email.
Local stockbroker Mike Brown and his son, Michael, took their boat to the accident scene, Debbie Brown said in an email. She said her son Michael and husband Mike Brown pulled the child and her grandmother from the water.
"I called 911 but it took forever for the paramedics," Brown said. The accident happened at Pumphouse Slough near Island Cove Marina off state Highway 58, Hicks said.
"Our neighbors all took turns giving CPR. We just wish we could have gotten to them faster," Debbie Brown wrote.
There were 12 people aboard the 30-foot, double-decker pontoon boat when the wind flipped it during Thursday's powerful evening storm, said TWRA spokesman Dan Hicks.
Debbie Brown wrote that she took the other children home and drove the grandfather to Erlanger.
Hicks said no names would be released until next of kin are notified.
