Despite Hurricane Sandy pounding the Northeast, Volkswagen Group of America today reported its Chattanooga-made Passat recorded its best October sales ever.

Also, overall U.S. sales for the automaker of 34,311 units were the highest for the month in 39 years, said Jonathan Browning, chief executive of Volkswagen Group of America.

"Despite over 25 percent of our dealers being impacted by the severe storm conditions, Volkswagen was able to increase sales by over 20 percent and deliver the best October in nearly 40 years - a testament to the resilience and strength of our dealer body," Browning said in a statement.

The Passat was recently added to Consumer Reports recommended list and 8,355 units were sold in October, according to VW.

Jetta sedan remains the volume leader for Volkswagen with sales totaling 11,253, the company reported.
