Marion probes death of child

A suspicious death investigation is under way in Marion County after a child was found dead inside a car in the Sequatchie River, WRCB-TV reported Sunday.

Marion County detectives told WRCB the boy was 8 or 9 years old and that he didn't drown. The boy's mother, Lindsey Newsome, was alive in the passenger seat and her boyfriend, Nicholas Mosier, was alive in the driver's seat.

The state medical examiner is performing an autopsy to determine how he died.

The Marion County Sheriff's Office, the TBI and Tennessee Highway Patrol are investigating, WRCB reported.


Hamilton jail inmate dies in cell

A man died Saturday night in his cell at the Hamilton County Jail, according to a sheriff's office news release.

Sheriff's office spokeswoman Janice Atkinson said the 48-year-old white man was found unresponsive at about 11:15 p.m. Staff began cardiopulmonary resuscitation, and the man was taken to Erlanger hospital, where he was pronounced dead.

The man's identity was not disclosed. Atkinson said the Hamilton County Medical Examiner will determine the cause of death.

The investigation is being handled by the Hamilton County Sheriff's Office Criminal Investigation Division. Additional information will be released when it becomes available, she said.
