The University of Tennessee at Chattanooga football team looked sharp and energetic for most of this morning's practice at Scrappy Moore Field. It was an improvement over Sunday's sluggish and sloppy session.
Here are some odds and ends from practice:
Top play: There was no clear winner here so we'll go with the long bomb pass from freshman quarterback Alejandro Bennifield down the middle of the field. Two receivers, Tray James and Riley Davis, were within feet of each other and went up for the ball - that probably wasn't supposed to happen - along with the defensive backs covering them.
When the quartet hit the ground, James was lying atop Davis, who was clutching the ball.
Top players: Defensive end Zach Rayl had another good day making plays in the backfield. Quarterback Jacob Huesman and wideout Tommy Hudson were sharp, including a stellar thread-the-needle completion between a pair of defenders.
Quotable: "It's stealing, man. When you've got talent, it isn't coaching." - defensive line coach Marcus West on the talent and depth UTC has at defensive end and tackle.
A good sign: Defensive tackle Josh Freeman has been among the Mocs' better players so far in camp. As you can read about in Tuesday's Times Free Press, Freeman started 10 games as a true freshman in 2011 and redshirted last season (for a variety of reasons). Now he's working his way back into the first-team mix.
A not so good sign: The Mocs haven't spent a great deal of time on the kicking game yet. When they have, the place-kicking - from the snap to the kicks - has been a bit inconsistent.
Up next: UTC is back at Scrappy at 6:30 Tuesday morning. On Wednesday the Mocs will go twice, at 7:45 a.m. and 6:30 p.m.
