A Calhoun, Ga., paving company may meet a Sept. 30 deadline to repave a busy two-mile section of Cloud Springs Road -- or the company could get a "rain delay."

Northwest Georgia Paving Inc. was the low bidder almost a year ago to repave the road, which also is known as state Route 146, between U.S. 27 and Lakeview Drive. The Georgia Department of Transportation awarded the contract to the Calhoun company on Nov. 2, 2012, for $404,000.

"They can finish still," GDOT spokesman Mohamed Arafa said. "But if they ask for a time extension, it will be granted because of wet weather."

GDOT could give the contractor an extension of up to six months, he said. A spokesman for Northwest Georgia Paving Inc. didn't return a call Monday afternoon seeking comment about when the work might start.

Work will be scheduled to minimize the impact on traffic, Arafa said.

"This is not widening. This is just resurfacing," he said.

GDOT area engineer Devon Brooks expects the contractor will finish the work before the deadline.

"They've got plenty of time," Brooks said. "They've got six weeks to finish. The work's only going to take two weeks."

The contractor has been busy doing other projects, she said.

All of the Cloud Springs Road repaving will be done at night. The contract forbids any construction work between 8 a.m. and 6 p.m.

"They could have a lane closure at night," Brooks said.

She expects the contractor to use pilot vehicles to lead drivers through the construction zone.
