In Tune: The Infamous Stringdusters

Thanks to a handful of experimental bluegrass bands in the 1970s, the world was introduced to a new sound penned as "newgrass." This style of music took a more progressive approach to traditional bluegrass music, mixing in rock music, jazz arrangements and an occasional electric instrument. It gave a more casual approach to bluegrass music in the sense of dress attire as well, as nice pressed suits, slick parted hair and crisp cowboy hats were replaced by long hair, flannel shirts and blue jeans. Initially unsupported by some of the traditional bluegrass scene, newgrass proved to be a staying power in the music scene as the genre quickly spread.

Since the early days of newgrass, many newer bands like Yonder Mountain String Band and Railroad Earth have kept this style of music alive and still growing strong. In 2007, The Infamous Stringdusters joined the caravan, and they have quickly become one of the leaders of the pack. Comprised of very talented musicians from different backgrounds, they initially chose Nashville, Tenn. as their home base. Their acoustic take on newgrass mixes a delivery of upbeat tunes with polished lead vocals and perfectly pitched harmonies that are occasionally reminiscent of traditional bluegrass, while other intricately arranged melodies sometimes take on a slight jazz approach. The one thing that seems to set them apart from many other newgrass bands is their precise delivery, be it vocally or musically. This talent and professionalism has helped them earn a Grammy nomination and other bluegrass awards. With a couple of member changes along the way, the creation of their own annual outdoor festival, the starting of their own record label and the relocation to their new home in Charlottesville, Va., the band has still managed to release four studio albums and one live album since their inception in 2007. This hard work has equipped them with a long list of original songs to incorporate into their live shows, where they are known to really shine. Bringing their talent to Chattanooga, The Infamous Stringdusters will take the stage for a live show at Track 29 on Friday, March 8.
