Lecture on black spirituals set
CLEVELAND, Tenn. - The Rev. Dr. Luke Powery will present "I'm Gonna Sing! The Faith and Music of the Unknown Black Bards" at 7 p.m. Wednesday in the Lee University Chapel as part of the 2012-13 Arts and Cultures Series.
Powery's lecture will be an interactive combination of spoken and sung word focusing on the historical context, spiritual themes and musical influence of African-American spirituals, according to a university news release.
He is the dean of Duke Chapel and an associate professor of the practice of homiletics at Duke Divinity School. He is the author of "Spirit Speech: Lament and Celebration in Preaching" and "Dem Dry Bones: Preaching, Death, and Hope."

Waterfall walk planned in DeSoto
FORT PAYNE, Ala. - Hikers and walkers are invited to view waterfalls at DeSoto State Park and Little River Canyon National Preserve on Sunday.
Walkers will traverse a moderate to rugged five- to six-mile trail with park and preserve staff to see Lost Falls, Laurel Falls and Indian Falls in their spring spate, along with unusual plants and spring foliage.
Hours are 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. CST. Visitors should meet park staff at the DeSoto State Park Country Store. Bring drinking water, snacks or lunch and a camera. Wear good walking shoes and clothes appropriate for the weather.

GDOT crews schedule work
CARTERSVILLE, Ga. - Workers with the Georgia Department of Transportation will be trimming vegetation today through Thursday on state Route 151 in Catoosa County; SR 58 in Dade County; SR 60 and SR 60 Spur in Fannin County; SR 515 in Gilmer County and SR 61 and 156 in Gordon County.
Hours are 7:30 a.m. to 5:30 p.m., weather permitting.
Motorists are asked to use extra caution when workers are present.
25 frat partiers stuck in elevator
KNOXVILLE - The Knoxville Fire Department was called after 25 people crammed into an elevator and it got stuck.
The Knoxville News Sentinel reported the group was headed to a top floor of Plaza Tower for a fraternity party late Friday night.
The 5-foot-by-5-foot elevator became stuck between the lobby and the 18th floor of the 27-story building.
Fire Capt. D.J. Corcoran said in his report that the group was uncooperative with firefighters, delaying their rescue for more than an hour.
No injuries were reported.
