Cold, snow flurries in weekend forecast for Chattanooga area

The first day of spring is just three weeks away, but winter promises to put up a chilly fight before March 20 arrives.

While this week's weather won't come close to the March 12, 1993, blizzard that dumped 20 inches of snow on the Chattanooga area, Mother Nature is planning a commemorative snow shower to remind locals that the 20th anniversary of the historic storm is approaching.

The region will see cooler weather moving in as early as today, according to Derek Eisentrout, National Weather Service meteorologist in Morristown, Tenn.

"Wind from the northwest is ushering in much, much colder air through the end of the work week and into the weekend," said Eisentrout.

High temperatures are expected to drop into the lower 40s by Sunday, with lows remaining in the 30s.

"There's a persistent chance of precipitation through the end of the week," Eisentrout said.

Just what that precipitation will look like depends on the temperature.

Today is expected to be dry, but by Friday night conditions again look good for light rain, possibly mixed with snow through Sunday.

"Anything that forms in the dark should be snow," said Paul Barys, chief meteorologist for WRCB-Channel 3.

Forecasters don't expect much accumulation, at most an inch and a half in higher elevations.

Higher elevations also could see some slick spots, but no serious travel troubles are anticipated, according to Verona Murrell, NWS meteorologist in Peachtree City, Ga.

Monday, highs are expected to reach the upper 40s, climbing into the lower 50s by Tuesday.
