Cosby became a household name with "I Spy." He was the first African-American to costar on a television series and won three consecutive Emmys for his work. He then created and produced the Emmy-winning cartoon "Fat Albert and the Cosby Kids, which began airing in the 1970s and was made into a film in 2004. The show was based on Cosby's childhood in Philadelphia and was both educational and entertaining.

He used a similar formula with "The Cosby Show," a weekly sitcom about a close-knit, upper-class black family. Time magazine called the show "an encouraging sign of maturity in matters of race." It was the No. 1 rated show for several years.
